This is the ultimate version of the Lotus Europa. Built from 1973 on with the big-valve Lotus Twin Cam engine, producing 125 bhp. As you can imagine, performance was impressive with a kerbweight of only 725 kg. Total production of the Twin Cam Special reached 3130 ex., of which only 1080 were for the home and european market, just like the one we are offering for sale. All Twin Cam Specials had a 5-speed gearbox, and could be ordered with the optional 5,5 J Brand Lotus alloy wheel and Oatmeal leather interior. Our car has got both options from new.
This example was delivered new in Denmark in July 1973 to the famous local racedriver Ib Völding. It was used as his private car, so never been raced. In 1975, the car was sold to its second owner with only 6500 km on the clocks. This second owner restored the car completely at 75000 km. The chassis was completely galvanised, and a brand new and original gearbox was installed (it is said that it was the very last example that Lotus Cars had in stock…) At the same time, the engine was completely overhauled. The third owner purchased the car in 2000 and had the complete wire loom replaced, a very important job for each Europa ! The fourth and last owner purchased the car in 2002, and had the body completely stripped and repainted in the famous John Player Special livery.
This fantastic Lotus Europa is in a great condition now, and a very sought after classic among collectors. Being one of the first mid-engined production cars, it is an important model and still affordable.
