Coventry-based Singer were one of the big-league players in the early thirties. Their success was based on quality engineering sold at a reasonable price. They were tough, reliable and although entirely conventional, but definitely a cut above average. The company introduced a Sports model of their successful Nine in order to spice up their marketing, entering works prepared cars into the 1933 Coupe des Alpes where they finished 2nd in class and the Le Mans 24 hour race where one came an extremely creditable 13th overall – an amazing performance for such a small sports car. The factory soon introduced an updated 'Le Mans' two-seater model with a hot cam and a large finned aluminium sump fitted to the 972cc ohc engine, along with a counter-balanced crank to better sustain high revs and mated this to a close-ratio 4-speed gearbox. To celebrate the Le Mans success, an exact copy of the Le Mans car was introduced in 1935 and called the "Le Mans Replica", but only 4 examples were sold and none of these is still in existence.
The car we are offering for sale is a perfect recreation of this "Le Mans Replica". Based on a 1935 Singer Nine Le Mans chassis - just as the factory did on the thirties - and fitted with a beautifully made aluminium body to the same competition specifications of the Le Mans Replica car. It also has the huge 90 litre fuel tank with double filler caps, twin fuel pumps, oil drip system and an engine cover made in one piece just as on the original car. The engine is upgraded as well, and mated to the correct and original 4-speed gearbox (which is quite a rare but very useful equipment on a small pre-war sportscar).
The Singer has a beautiful patina, and has been used in some pre-war events over the years (Monthlery Revival, Grand Prix Retro Yvois, Zandvoort Vintage Revival,...). It's a pleasure to drive as well, with a good driving position and a lovely soundtrack. The view over the long bonnet and nicely shaped dashboard (with correct "British Jaeger" instruments) is magnificentl and adds a lot to the driving experience.
This is a rather affordable pre-war sportscar in great condition, ready to be enjoyed for any event and the perfect entry in the world of vintage motorcars.
