After the successful introduction of the Porsche 944 Turbo in 1985, Porsche started the development of the first one make race series in the history of Porsche. This cup was called 944 Turbo Cup. These cars received a number of performance-enhancing modifications which were then used into the serial production of the 944 Turbo S. The engine of the Turbo Cup cars delivered initially 220 bhp which was later increased to 250 bhp and even to 290 bhp for French cup cars. This Turbo Cup race series were carried out in Germany from 1986 to 1989, and in France from 1987 to 1990. While in 1990 in Germany the 944 Turbo Cup was taken over by the 964 Carrera Cup, the Turbo Cup in France was continued for one more year and saw the ultimate evolution of these cars.
These French Turbo Cup cars - just as the car we are offering for sale - had officially a 290bhp engine, but in reality the power output was over 300 bhp. This was achieved by using a remapped Bosch Motronic, 3 bar fuel pressure regulator, a modified wastegate and “colder” spark plugs. Further improvements were the fitting of an oil sump with increased capacity and an intake manifold both made from light weight magnesium. In the engine bay, a strut brace was fitted as well. Also a "Cup" exhaust was fitted without catalytic converter. The interior was stripped out including the deletion of the rear seats, a “Matter” roll cage and Recaro seats including 5 point harnesses. Many comfort items such as AC, radio, central locking, electric windows and power-assisted steering were removed allowing the car to lose a considerable amount of weight. The exterior received some minor changes as well by fitting lighter Cup mirrors, and the fitting of air intakes instead of front fog lights. These were necessary to cool the brakes, which were borrowed from the 928 S4. The Cup cars raced on 16" magnesium wheels, and had a total weight of 1160 kg only.
Performance was impressive, with 0-100 kph times of under 4,4 seconds and a top speed of +300 kph. These French 944 Turbo Cup racers even outperformed the later 964 Carrera Cup cars...
This example was raced from 1989, and finished 2nd in the French 944 Turbo Cup in 1990, driven by André Bourdon. It comes with service history and many invoices including a gearbox rebuild. The car has never been damaged or accident repaired, and comes with all original Cup parts (magnesium wheels, magnesium intake, original engine, original Matter rollcage and without coating on the underbody). It has a French road registration and as thus street legal.
So this is another rare Porsche in fantastic condition. A great trackday tool, or maybe an exciting roadcar. It is very well documented, and ready for use. A nice addition to any Porsche collection, and due to its rarity and condition a safe investment as well.
